From the 23rd to the 25th of October 2008 the 6th European Day of Civil Justice and the 3rd Plenary Session of the network of courts referring to the European Commission for Justice efficacy (CEPEJ) will be held in Catania. To the event – organised for the first time in Italy by the Court of Appeal of Catania together with the European Union and the Council of Europe – representatives of 36 European judiciary offices will take part in order to answer to the following question: “How can we contribute to organise a quicker and more efficient Justice?”
During the meeting the European Commission and the Council of Europe will confer the “The Crystal Scales of Justice” Award – usually conferred every two years – to the offices that distinguished themselves in improving the quality of the civil judicial system.
The vice-president Franco Frattini, already European Commissioner responsible for Freedom, Security and Justice sections, underlined the importance of the award: “This prize is a fundamental means to arouse emulation among European Judicial Authorities so as to study new procedures to improve the quality of Justice. It is also an emblematic example of an event that associates, voluntarily, magistrates and experts in Civil Law to cooperate with the European Commission and the Council of Europe”.
The ceremony of the Award, to which even the Italian Minister of Justice, Angelino Alfano, and the Italian Minister of the Environment, Stefania Prestigiacomo, will take part, will be held in Catania the 24th of October 2008 at the Meeting Centre “Le Ciminiere”. The Prize will be conferred by a jury made up of experts in Civil Law. Moreover three special mentions will be conferred.
“In 2003 the European Commission and the Council of Europe founded the European Day of Civil Justice, celebrated every 25th of October, – comments the president of the Court of Appeal of Catania Guido Marletta – in order to let Civil Justice be closer to European citizens. This year Sicily will be the centre of Europe to promote the exchange of information, experiences and efficient procedures. This day is intended to offer an opportunity to make Civil Justice more accessible to citizens”.
