achieving its Offset obligations to the be­nefit of the industrial partners, of the Portuguese state and eco­nomy. Garry Perks General Mana­ger of Leonardo in Portugal, an­swered questions of the Tribuna Economica.

Mr. Perks, Leonardo has been present in Portugal since 2008. Who are your main partners?

Since Leonardo first establi­shed a legal entity in Portugal, now called Leonardo-Portugal S.A, it has entered into succes­sful collaborations with a num­ber of Portuguese based organi­sations which include CEiiA, OGMA, Critical Software and Assystem. Some of these colla­borations have enabled signifi­cant enhancement of technologi­cal capability and knowhow which in turn has led to the esta­blishment of high quality em­ployment in Portugal. In additio­nal to these industrial relation­ships, Leonardo-Portugal S.A has also enjoyed long standing relationships with the providers of professional services, most notably MLGTS (lawyers) and AC Contabilidade (accountants).

In 2018, Leonardo-Portu­gal SA was established which strengthened the Group's pre­sence in the country. What has changed from 2008 to 2018?

In 2018 Leonardo re-branded all of it’s group companies and subsidiaries and so the legal en­tity name in Portugal changed from AgustaWestland Portugal S.A to Leonardo-Portugal S.A. At the same time the scope of responsibility of Leonardo-Portugal S.A. increased to go beyond the needs of only sup­porting Leonardo’s Helicopter Division to being the sole repre­sentative of all Leonardo busi­ness divisions in Portugal. Leo­nardo has 5 Divisions; Electro­nics, Helicopters, Aircraft, Aero structures and Cyber security and operates in the following do­mains; Air, Land, Sea, Cyber & Security, Space and Services and Training. Even though Offset is no longer a contractual obligation in EU countries, Leonardo ne­vertheless continues to recognise the value of collaborating with competent Portuguese busines­ses to deliver high quality and commercially competitive solu­tions and at the same time sup­porting employment and techno­logical growth in Portugal.

Portugal managed to with­stand the crisis due to the pan­demic better than expected. The economic crisis has slowed the Leonardo projects in the country?

Generally speaking the pan­demic has not had any signifi­cant impact on Leonardo’s busi­ness in Portugal and we have adapted quickly to required changes in working practices, in­cluding finding alternative ways of continuing to communicate regularly and effectively with our customers despite obvious restrictions on international tra­vel and face to face meetings. Management of existing con­tracts continues without inter­ruption and we remain available to develop new business oppor­tunities in existing as well as new market sectors in Portugal.

Is Leonardo interested in identifying further business opportunities in Portugal? In which sectors?

Leonardo is certainly intere­sted in continuing to grow it’s business in Portugal and still views Portugal as a country with needs that fit well with Leonar­do’s group capabilities. Leonar­do-Portugal S.A. has recently moved into a new, modern offi­ce facility in Lagoas Park near Oeiras which provides excellent access to customers, Govern­ment departments and institu­tions, local suppliers and many potential future customers and collaborators, across the whole range of listed market sectors, who also have facilities within a small radius of this excellent lo­cation. In particular Leonardo is well placed to build upon it’s existing business in Portugal which is currently predominan­tly in the areas of Land, Sea and Air Defence systems, Helicop­ters and Aircraft. Other areas to highlight include Cyber security, Space and other leading edge te­chnologies for use in Policing and security operations. Leonardo also has proven ca­pabilities that position it well to meet all future needs for airport infrastructure and systems requi­rements in Portugal, whether for the new second airport to serve Lisbon or to update existing air­ports with state of the art sy­stems such as Air Traffic Con­trol Radar, baggage handling and security systems.
