The first estimate for euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world in August 2021 was €184.3 billion, an increase of 18.2% compared with August 2020 (€155.9 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €179.5 bn, a rise of 26.6% compared with August 2020 (€141.8 bn). As a result, the euro

area recorded a €4.8 bn surplus in trade in goods with the rest of the world in August 2021, compared with +€14.0 bn in August 2020. Intra-euro area trade rose to €155.5 bn in August 2021, up by 21.2% compared with August 2020.

In January to August 2021, euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world rose to €1 563.0 bn (an increase of 15.2% compared with January-August 2020), and imports rose to €1 436.2 bn (an increase of 16.8% compared with January-August 2020). As a result the euro area recorded a surplus of €126.9 bn, compared with +€126.8 bn in January-August 2020. Intra-euro area trade rose to €1 388.4 bn in January-August 2021, up by 20.3% compared with January-August 2020.

European Union.    The first estimate for extra-EU exports of goods in August 2021 was €164.7 billion, up by 18.0% compared with August 2020 (€139.6 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €169.8 bn, up by 31.8% compared with August 2020 (€128.8 bn). As a result, the EU recorded a €5.0 bn deficit in trade in goods with the rest of the world in August 2021, compared with a surplus of €10.8 bn in August 2020. Intra-EU trade rose to €247.8 bn in August 2021, +18.9% compared with August 2020.

In January to August 2021, extra-EU exports of goods rose to €1 400.0 bn (an increase of 13.8% compared with January-August 2020), and imports rose to €1 306.6 bn (an increase of 16.7% compared with January-August 2020). As a result, the EU recorded a surplus of €93.4 bn, compared with +€110.6 bn in January-August 2020. Intra-EU trade rose to €2 187.6 bn in January-August 2021, +20.6% compared with January-August 2020.

Annual comparison by Member State.   In August 2021, compared with August 2020, all the Member States registered a large increase in extra-EU exports except Slovakia (-14.6%). The highest increases were registered in Cyprus (+62.1%), Greece (+54.8%) and Luxembourg (+53.8%).

With regard to the extra-EU imports, all Member States registered an increase in extra-EU imports in August 2021 compared to August 2020. The highest increases were observed in Latvia (+138.7%), Estonia (+76.3%) and Slovenia (+70.8%).
